Weekly Rewind

Weekly rewind #1

The world has changed. I see it in the water. I feel it in the Earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it

Galadriel, in "The Lord of the Rings"

This year feels like a year of change —not like the wind, but in the sense that things will be done differently. We started the year visiting my home village, and that alone gives me hope that 2026 will, indeed, be different.

🌊 We went to the beach and the water was, as usual, very cold. That did not stop us from enjoying the sea. Stoics took cold plunges to start a new year or to test themselves. We...just get into the water and enjoy nature.

🎮 When I was a child, our great fount of joy was going to the arcades during summer. Growing up in Latin America in the 80s was not like Stranger Things...We did not have Nintendos or Ataris, we dreamt of having them but most of us, did not even have a color tv. So summer (from December to February) was the time for us to enjoy Tetris, Donkey Kong and Pacman. The arcades opened and we stayed until they closed around midnight. Going back now with my twins felt like a small adventure across time.

🥐 Croissants or "medialunas" as we call them are part of our breakfast customs and my kids ate ten thousand kilograms of medialunas. It was good to see them enjoying that part of their inherited culture.

🎲 As my sister and I used to do when we were kids, we played a lot board games and cards. Nice to see that my kids can live without tv or video games on my cellphone.

🌝 We were lucky enough to, not only spent New Year's Eve and New Year with my family after 5 years, but also to enjoy a beautiful full moon on January 3rd.

All in all, it was very good to see Wanda and Pietro happy in my home town and my husband Olek enjoying the calm and slower rhythm of December and the first week of the year.

Watched

📺 We (re)watched with my mum and husband the amazing series "Faros, la luz de la civilización" which tells the story of the lighthouses along the Argentine coast. One of the episodes is about the lighthouse built in my region.

Reading/Listening

📚 "And quietly flows the Don" by Mikhail Sholokhov. It is a 4 book-story that I've read many times. Each book is around 400 pages but you read it so easily that you don't see the time passing. It is my favorite book and I have a USSR translation into Spanish that I treasure as a chest full of gold.
